You're Not Alone

The loss of a pet is the loss of a cherished family member. It's natural to experience sadness, grief, and a wide range of emotions after saying goodbye.

There is no "right" way to grieve and no timeline you need to follow. Give yourself the time and grace you need to heal.

What Should You Do

Your journey of grief will not take on a prescribed pattern or look like stages. During the period when you are actively mourning your loss, it may help to consider some of the steps listed below. Additional resources are available at Pet Parent Grief Support. You can also call the Pet Parent Grief Line at (844) 472-9588.

Gentle Steps on Your Journey

  • Acknowledge the Reality

It takes time to adjust to the "presence of the absence" in your home. Be patient with yourself as you find your footing.

  • Feel the Pain

Trying to push sadness away only delays healing. It is okay to cry, to feel angry, or to sit quietly with your grief.

  • Keep Memories Alive

Look at old photos, write your pet a letter, or write down your favorite memories together. They live on through your stories.

  • Redefine Your Routine

You might feel lost without the daily walks or feeding routines. Acknowledge this shift as a natural part of your mourning.

  • Search for Meaning

It is completely normal to ask big questions about life, spirituality, and why our companions can't stay longer.

  • Lean on Other

Share your feelings with people who understand the unique bond between humans and animals. You don't have to carry this alone.
