Heartworm disease is a potentially life-threatening illness caused by parasitic worms that live in the heart, lungs, and blood vessels of infected animals. While dogs are the most commonly affected, cats and other mammals can also become infected.

Detecting heartworms is simple and only requires a quick, in-house blood test. This test checks for specific heartworm proteins (antigens) in your pet's blood.

Treatment Can Be Challenging

For infected dogs, treatment often involves multiple injections, strict activity restriction, and careful monitoring during recovery. The process can take several weeks and carries potential risks.

Unfortunately, there is currently no approved treatment that eliminates adult heartworms in cats, making prevention especially important for feline companions.
